Featuring Dr. Giulia Friso of Cornell's School of Integrative Plant Science
In partnership with Criterion Travel
Your circumnavigation of Sicily aboard the iconic Sea Cloud II features passionate teacher and plant scientist, Dr. Giulia Friso, whose work brings the chemistry, culture, and healing power of plants vividly to life. Sail into a Mediterranean crossroads where trade winds once carried spices, medicinals, and ideas that shaped human health. Taste sun-warmed Marsala in a private cellar, feel the deck shift beneath you during a golden-hour sail through the Strait of Messina, and trace how culinary traditions, plant chemistry, and cultural exchange still characterize Mediterranean life. This is Sicily experienced with all senses awake—salt air, citrus groves, volcanic soil, and the living legacy of plants as partners in human wellbeing.
Sail Sicily’s storied coast! Like Marjorie Merriweather Post’s legendary Sea Cloud, Sea Cloud II embodies the elegance and romance of a bygone era while offering the highest standards of modern comfort. Operated by a highly skilled crew who hand-set more than 30,000 square feet of canvas, life aboard seamlessly blends classic sailing traditions with refined service, spacious accommodations, and thoughtful amenities, creating an experience that is both timeless and luxurious.
Spend a night in luminous Valletta, visit Trapani’s salt-bright shores, taste the flavors of Palermo’s vibrant markets, marvel at Giardini Naxos beneath Etna’s volcanic power, and soak in Syracuse’s ancient stone and sea light, checking your bucket list off as you go.
From the archaeological and architectural splendors of the ancient city of Segesta and the opulence of Palermo’s Norman Palace to the rich flavors of Marsala and the ritual of morning espresso on deck, this voyage moves seamlessly between grandeur and intimacy—where sunlit stone, sea spray, citrus groves, and centuries of cultural exchange awaken every sense and draw you into Sicily’s layered, living story.
You will be in the good company of Cornell alumni, family, and friends on this trip, as well as joined by constituents from Harvard University, the Archaeological Institute of America, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In addition to CAU's Study Tour leader, Dr. Giulia Friso, John Meffert—a consultant on Heritage Conservation Services for the National Trust for Historic Preservation—will also be sharing lectures throughout the trip that are open to all.
The most enlightening teachers spark lively discussion, welcome every question, and make complex ideas feel vividly alive. Dr. Giulia Friso’s devoted CAU following attests that she does all that—and more. Described as brilliant, passionate, and devoted to coupling rigorous scientific depth with immersive exploration, Giulia plants ideas that flourish, reshaping how you see, taste, and understand the living world around you.
