The good Cornellians can do: Pedro Escobar Jr. MBA ’23
Pedro Escobar Jr. MBA ’23 has been living in Greenville, South Carolina for the past 15 years, including throughout his Cornell Executive MBA Americas program at the SC Johnson College of Business.
A few years ago, Pedro noticed a LinkedIn post by the Hispanic Alliance of South Carolina. The group was launching a new initiative called the Student DREAMers Alliance, and they were seeking mentors for high school students.
The mission of the group resonated with Pedro, who knew firsthand the challenges faced by these students as they pursue their education.
“As the son of Honduran immigrants, I grew up watching my parents navigate the challenges of language barriers, financial illiteracy, and limited access to opportunity,” Pedro shares. “Volunteering felt like a chance to pay forward the same support that helped me find my own path. I know how powerful it can be to have someone in your corner who believes in you,” he says.
Pedro coached Edwin on English and on coding skills, so that he can pursue his dream of attending community college. When Edwin graduated from high school, his parents in El Salvador were unable to attend the ceremony. Pedro was honored to be there for Edwin.
“Seeing his pride and knowing the challenges he had overcome reminded me that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do as mentors is simply show up,” Pedro says.
Pedro works as senior manager of business development for Break Through Tech, an initiative of Cornell Tech that seeks to open doors for high-potential undergraduate students from across the country. He also serves as a mentor to a current Cornell EMBA student.
