The good Cornellians can do: Neal Weinstein ’70
In 2010 Neal Weinstein '70 retired from his role as vice president of customer service and manufacturing operations for a life sciences company in San Jose, California. After a few months of catching up on household projects, he opened up a folder he had created, labeled “Retirement.”
Inside was one item: an article about SCORE, a national volunteer organization whose mission is to foster vibrant small business communities through mentoring and education.
Neal reached out to his local chapter and began volunteering to mentor small businesses in San Jose and the Silicon Valley area. He helps clients, including nonprofits, get started, thrive, and grow—all free of charge.
He and another volunteer recently worked with the owner of a boutique human resources consulting firm.
“We initially helped her get expense reporting for her staff and the P&L (profits & losses) under control. Then we went on to assist with strategy development and implementation.” Neal says. “This resulted in significant growth in revenue, profit, and staff. Soon thereafter, she sold the firm to a larger consultancy for a substantial sum and a key position for her with the new company.”
