The good Cornellians can do: Dianne Zimet Newman ’65

Dianne in Jerusalem in summer 2023, where she advocated to improve conditions in the Israeli court system.

For the past 43 years, Temple Emanu-El has been a second home to Dianne Zimet Newman ’65. Dianne began volunteering at this synagogue when she first relocated to Providence, Rhode Island in 1982 for work.

Dianne’s career spanned 25 years in strategic planning and business development for Fortune 100 corporations, including General Electric, Northrop-Grumman, and Allied-Signal. When she wasn’t traveling for work, she devoted many hours to her Temple.

Over the past four decades Dianne has helped present and coordinate weekly services, select rabbis and cantors for the congregation, and sung in the Temple’s choral group. She continues to volunteer in the Temple kitchen to prepare communal meals.

“Several years ago, I chaired the food committee for an event celebrating Yiddish language and culture,” Dianne says. “Despite being told that it couldn't be done within our budget, our committee made a 4-course dinner for 250 people featuring brisket as the main dish. When word went out that we were serving brisket, we were quickly oversubscribed, and attendees raved about the food for months after the dinner!”
