Tracking impacts of wildfire smoke in Cayuga watershed

Nicole Fernandez, assistant professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and her students have been monitoring Cascadilla Creek on a daily basis. When wildfire smoke blanketed New York State earlier this summer, it caused spikes in phosphorus concentrations in the creek water. Conditions are right for a colorful fall

Cornell Professor Art DeGaetano says the conditions this summer were favorable (adequate rain and moderate temperatures) for trees to make sugars that help produce their colors. He expects fall colors to peak in the Adirondacks and Catskills in the next two weeks, and in Central New York by the second week of October. Bird migration forecast

329 million birds are expected to migrate through the eastern US after sunset on Thursday, September 14. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Colorado State University produce these forecasts using data from the past 23 years of bird movements in the atmosphere, as detected by the US NEXRAD weather surveillance radar network.
