Warren Allmon is Director of the Paleontological Research Institution in Ithaca, a position he has held since 1992. From 2008 to 2024 he was the Hunter Rawlings III Professor of Paleontology in Cornell’s Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences. Since 2012 he has taught evolution to undergraduates at Shoals Marine Lab. His research focuses on fossil marine mollusks and macroevolution. In addition to teaching many CAU Summer participants about the wonders of Ithaca's gorges, Warren has led numerous CAU Study Tours to Patagonia, Iceland, Galapagos, and most recently, Antarctica in early 2024.
Although it is far away from Ithaca, New York (about 11,800 km, or 7,400 miles, to be precise), the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula is well represented in the enormous fossil collections held by the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) in Ithaca. PRI’s collection includes more than 35,000 specimens from Antarctica, making it one of the largest such collections in the world. Read more...
Read Warren's account of his 2024 expedition to Antarctica with CAU to learn how the science of Antarctica's present relates to the future of planet Earth.
"Warren did a masterful job explaining and integrating theory and data to develop practical and coherent approaches to big problems like climate change. Unlike many academics, his sentences were concise and it was easy to integrate the theoretical ideas that he presented. At the end of his first lecture, I felt that I had been given a new set of "idea legos" to put together in new ways to approach climate change." ~CAU Antarctica 2024 Traveler
"Thoroughly enjoyed both the lectures and informal discussions with Warren! He was excellent—very engaging!" ~CAU Antarctica 2024 Traveler

Awaken this morning well into your journey across the Drake Passage. Lying between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula, the Drake holds a unique place in maritime lore. Sometimes misty and gray, other times calm and clear, crossing the legendary Drake Passage is unforgettable—a milestone in any adventurer’s personal travel history.

With long hours of daylight at this time of year, you have ample opportunity to explore the Antarctic Peninsula and the surrounding islands. In keeping with the nature of an expedition, the schedule is flexible so that we can take advantage of the unexpected—watching whales perform off the bow, taking an after-dinner Zodiac cruise, or heading out on an unplanned landing.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We anticipate making landings to walk ashore and kayak among the ice floes and experience close encounters with wildlife. You may have the thrill of watching the powerful ship head into the pack ice or stepping ashore to thousands of Adélie and chinstrap penguins. You’ll learn how climate change affects the penguin populations and how to best capture images of those same penguins from an accomplished professional photographer.
Back aboard, the undersea specialist may present video from that day’s dive or show rare images taken up to 1,000 feet below the surface. The expert staff will craft an expedition where you will learn, see, and experience more.
Enjoy the ship’s amenities as the Antarctic coast disappears from view, round the southernmost tip of South America, and see the meeting of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Celebrate your voyage at a farewell dinner on board.
