In late January 2020, Carin Ashjian (’82) set sail from Tromsø Norway on a Russian icebreaker, bound for the MOSAiC ice camp located near the North Pole. The MOSAiC (Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate) expedition established a year-long ice camp in the high Arctic centered around the German icebreaker Polarstern from which a comprehensive examination of all aspects of the the Arctic marine system under climate change was conducted (https://mosaic-expedition.org/expedition/).

During the 4.5 months of her trip, Carin experienced polar night and day, extremes in temperature, dynamic ice conditions, changing sampling conditions, and on-board teamwork and camaraderie, all while the world descended into a global pandemic.

Carin will provide an overview of the MOSAiC project, her work, some preliminary results, and her voyage to and from the MOSAiC ice camp. Carin Ashjian is a biological oceanographer whose research has focused on oceanography, zooplankton ecology, and biological-physical interactions in many of the world’s oceans.

For the past 20 years, she has addressed the impact of climate change on polar ecosystems and on the greater Arctic system, including the human communities that live there. Ashjian is a Senior Scientist and Department Chair in the Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Woods Hole MA. She earned a B.A. in Biology from Cornell University (’82) and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island (’91).
