Neurodegeneration: A Growing Crisis

One in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, one in 100 seniors have Parkinson’s Disease and two in every 100,000 people each year receive the devastating diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). There are no cures for these neurodegenerative disorders despite decades of academic and drug discovery research. Join us to discuss why these diseases are so difficult to understand and find out about ongoing research at Brown in this area of great need.  

Professor Lipscombe graduated with a PhD in Pharmacology from University College London in 1986 and then studied with Richard W Tsien as a postdoctoral associate at Yale University School of Medicine and subsequently at Stanford University Medical School. In 1992 she joined the Department of Neuroscience at Brown. In November 2018, Professor Lipscombe assumes the role as president of The Society for Neuroscience, the world’s largest organization for the study of the brain and nervous system with nearly 38,000 members from 90 countries.

Passed hot hors d’oeuvres: mini lobster thermidor, petit roasted red bliss potatoes with creme fraiche and caviar and sliced sirloin foci with bearnaise sauce
Passed cold hors d’oeuvres: mini mozzarella artichokes, roasted peppers on skewers, deviled eggs with imported ham.  

6:30 pm Dinner
1st Course: mini cheese ravioli with pesto cream sauce and reggiano cheese.  
Main Course: 4-ounce filet mignon, topped with three sautéed shrimp and herbed compound butter, whipped potatoes and carrots

7:30 pm Dessert and Speaking Program with Q&A
Dessert: individual opera cakes with chocolate and coffee glaze
