While often synonymous with the “Uber workforce,” this not-so-new work model presents benefits, risks and unintended consequences for both employees and employers. Cornell Assistant Professor Michael Maffie of the Nolan School of Hotel Administration will share insights on how workers, managers and companies could mutually benefit.

Michael Maffie received his Ph.D. in Labor and Employment Relations at Cornell’s ILR School and previously was on faculty at Penn State University.

His research focuses on the intersection of technical and organizational change, specifically how technology is affecting the service industry. His work has looked at how algorithmic management is reshaping consumer-worker interactions, how gig work is weakening individual’s attachment to traditional employment, and how digital platforms are constructing new relationships within the workplace.
