Location: Salt Lake City, UT

The MIT Club of Utah is hosting a Mental Arithmetic Talk on this Thursday, April 26. It will be held 7:00-9:00 PM at the downtown Salt Lake City Library (210 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111) in Conference Room C. The audience of this event extends to high schoolers who are fascinated with math, and members are encouraged to bring their sons/daughters if they are interested in the topic. Here’s the synopsis:

Hilarie Orman and Rich Schroeppel have been writing a monograph about mental arithmetic (no computer, no pencil, no paper): factoring numbers. Rich has developed some methods based on sophisticated mathematics that work for 5-, 6-, or 7-digit numbers. Although the principles are grounded in number theory, all you need to know is high school algebra. This is original work, unrelated to anything else you may have learned on the subject! Light refreshments will be provided. The event is free, and registration is at this link.
