Reed Professor in the Department of Human Development, Professor of Gerontology in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, and Senior Associate Dean for Research and Outreach in the College of Human Ecology.

“Family Rifts and How to Mend Them: Findings from the Cornell Family Reconciliation Project”

Five years ago, Cornell sociologist Dr. Karl Pillemer decided to undertake a major research project on family rifts and the ways people overcome them. Using in-depth interviews with family members and family therapists, as well as a national survey, he brings research to bear on questions like: How prevalent are estrangements in families? What causes rifts? Most important, Pillemer conducted the largest study ever done of individuals who successfully reconciled after years, or decades of estrangement.
