A SUMMER ADVENTURE

Wednesday, June 15th
 10:00 AM – Noon

ARIZONA STATE MUSEUM
THE INNER SANCTUM
(The Vaults, The Storerooms)
Inside the Main Gate at Park Avenue and University Blvd.

Many of you missed the fabulous “Tour of the Vaults” that  the Arizona State Museum (ASM) hosted last year, but we are going to do it again.   You will be given the rare treat of meeting and talking with the museum professionals who are passionate about curating some of the largest and most significant collections in the world.  We will be entering their magical world and they will show us their treasures.

You will be taken on a behind-the-scenes tour into cool, climate-controlled storerooms (the inner sanctum) where you will come face to face with stunning examples of the museum’s incomparable collections of Southwest Indian pottery and American Indian basketry.  Also, you will meet preservation scientists who set international standards for collections-care through ground-breaking research in a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory.  And, you will visit the nationally renowned laboratory of zooarchaeology, where scholars will demonstrate what they learn about human behavior by studying animal bone.

We will gather in the lobby of the museum a little before 10 AM, get our name tags, have a bit of an overview of the museum, and then, off we go!  This is a memorable experience.  Bring your camera!

Established in 1893, Arizona State Museum is:
•  The oldest and largest anthropology museum in the Southwest
•  One of the original research units established at the  University of Arizona
•  The largest and busiest state-run archaeological repository in the nation

•  Home of the world’s largest collection of American Indian basketry, designated an American Treasure
•  Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums
•  An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution

This will be a fascinating two-hour experience, 10 a.m. to noon.  You will love it!

Extra:  Wilko’s For lunch.  If it suits your fancy, please join us for a bite to eat after the tour at Wilko’s, a very casual restaurant across from the front of the museum.  Meet in the museum lobby after the tour, and we’ll walk over together.
