Cornell and Friends Book Club – Fall 2018 Meeting Agenda

5:00 p.m. Grab Food/Drink and Comfortable Seat!

5:15 p.m. Introductions/ Host: Iberian Pig Overview

5:30 p.m. The “Host’s Pick” Fall 2018 Read – The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger.
In 1991 the Andrea Gail set sail off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts, on a fishing expedition. Neither the ship nor its crew were to return home. In The Perfect Storm, author Sebastian Junger tells the story of the Andrea Gail and its crew. Junger purports to give a factual narrative of the events that transpired. The Perfect Storm abounds with factual details about boats and fishing that will be unfamiliar to non-fishermen as well as technical discussion of the weather conditions and meteorological processes that obtain at sea. Of course, since none aboard the Andrea Gail returned to describe what happened, Junger’s narrative necessarily involves some speculative aspects, especially concerning the final moments of the lives of the crew members.

6:30 p.m. Decatur Book Festival (DBF) Author Reading – Author Elaine Neil Orr will be joining us. Elaine is the critically acclaimed writer of A Different Sun, a Southern coming-of-age novel that sets three very different young people against the tumultuous years of the American civil rights movement.  Elaine will be doing a reading from her latest novel Swimming Between Worlds.  Please visit the Elaine’s website to pre-order the book or explore any of her literary gems.

We will be hosting our final 2018 book club meet up in celebration of DBF.  Prior to our meeting, there will be the perfect opportunity to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more. Please feel free to explore the website for the opportunity to join world-class authors and hundreds of thousands of festival-goers in historic downtown Decatur square.
