It’s that time of year again – Cornell Cares Day! Cornell Cares Day is a worldwide student and alumni service event that connects Cornellians to serve in their local community through direct, hands-on service projects as they swap stories and network. In San Francisco, we will be celebrating Cornell Cares Day on Saturday, January 4. Join us as we volunteer at the SF-Marin Food Bank, at the San Francisco warehouse.
SF-Marin Food Bank Mission:
“The SF-Marin Food Bank’s mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin, where one in four neighbors is at risk of hunger. We envision a community where everyone is able to obtain enough nutritious food in a dignified manner to support the health and well-being of themselves and their families. We address hunger head on: from our pantry network and home-delivered groceries, to our nutrition-education classes and CalFresh food-stamp enrollment, we work in many ways to nourish and empower neighbors in need. Every week, 30,000 households count on us for food assistance. Nearly 60 percent of what we distribute is fresh fruits and vegetables.”
We will be volunteering at the San Francisco warehouse at 900 Pennsylvania Avenue from 12:00pm – 2:00pm. We will assist with gleaning produce, repacking bulk food items, sorting through food donations, assembling grocery boxes, and many other projects in the warehouse and community. Children and families are welcome, however please note that all children must be at least 8 years old and must be accompanied by an adult (no drop offs). There are many other groups volunteering on the weekends, so wear your Cornell gear or red so we can find each other!
• All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes – no sandals, flip-flops or open toe shoes.
• A sweatshirt or extra layer is recommended, as the temperature in the warehouse is often quite cool.
• There is limited on-site parking is available due to construction in the area. Please look for street parking on Pennsylvania Avenue and the surrounding streets around the Food Bank and allow an extra 15-20 minutes for parking before our shift.
Please contact Catherine Meng ’09 with any questions.
