This is an online workshop to improve the composition and artistry of your photography, regardless of your experience or your gear (camera phones welcome). The session will cover many of the techniques and compositional tools a photographer can use to improve their images, and will introduce or expand upon your knowledge of various artistic and compositional ideas, tools, and terms that can improve all types of photography.  

Topics Covered:
•What makes a photo great?
•Elements of Composition and how to use them
•How the eye reads a photo
•How to direct the viewer’s eye within a photo
•Working a scene or subject
•Dissecting images – the vocabulary of composition

Class Structure:
•Two-hour online course with live instruction
•Q&A breaks throughout
•Homework assignments to reinforce session material

Student Materials:
A notepad and pen are all that are required. The techniques discussed apply to nearly any type of photography (even phone photography) so no special gear is needed. Zoom link will be sent to registrants prior to event.

Instructor:
Michael Kawano is a professional photographer and photography instructor. He teaches at Looking Glass Photo in Berkeley and at UC Berkeley Lair of the Bear summer camp. His work has been shown at the California Academy of Sciences and the Alameda Historical Museum, and he has a long list of clients for his portrait shoots. Michael is a past president and board member of the Alameda Photographic Society.
