Big Red Friends and Families should bring their dogs (or love of dogs) to Fort Funston the morning of Saturday, September 30th. We’ll walk the beach and get to know each other. This is a great, casual event for old and new members!
Fort Funston features 200 foot high sandy bluffs on San Francisco’s southwest coast where the winds blow reliably wildly. No surprise it is one of the premier hang-gliding spots in the country. A network of trails make it ideal for hiking and horseback riding. Most importantly, Fort Funston is off leash so dogs love to run in the sand and splash in the waves.
Big Red Dogs events will help fund Cornell NorCal’s two Cornell endowed scholarships—the Ira B. Degenhardt Tradition Fellowship and the Peter E. Lee Tradition Fellowship—both of which are managed by Cornell University. These funds allow us to award Tradition Fellowships to two deserving students from the Bay Area for each year of their four-year tenure at Cornell.
Location: Park and meet at the path to the stairwell to the beach (to the left of the hang glider launch zone).
Trail Distance: We’ll walk the beach for at least a mile to/from the starting point.
This is an easy/moderate hike. Dress in layers based on the weather conditions and bring water for you (and your pup!) to stay hydrated. The beach can be windy. There is one fairly strenuous staircase (at beginning/end) that we will take slowly.
