Portland Commissioner Mingus Mapps, Ph.D. ’04, will be our featured guest in this installment of the Cornell Club of Oregon and Southwest Washington’s Notable Speaker Series. Dr. Mapps’ talk will cover a range of topics, including the following:

  • Goals and challenges for the Portland City Council of Commissioners, with a focus on the bureaus for which Commissioner Mapps is responsible
  • How the City of Portland coordinates with other goverment organizations at the county, state, and regional level, in dealing with our region’s biggest issues, such as those posed by the coronavirus, last summer’s wildfires, and the recent electric power outages
  • How the Government department at Cornell prepares graduates for a career in public service

Elected to his seat in January of this year, Dr. Mapps is the Commissioner oversees the Water Bureau, the Bureau of Environmental Services and the Bureau of Emergency Communications. He is also the liaison to Travel Portland, the Visitors Development Fund and the Fair and Moral Claims Board. Commissioner Mapps earned his Ph.D. in Government at Cornell in 2004.
