All the Queens Houses

Rafael Herrin-Ferri ’96, BArch ’99

A resident of Woodside, Queens, Herrin-Ferri offers (in the words of the subtitle), “an architectural portrait of New York’s largest and most diverse borough,” also his own home turf. The volume—from a Berlin-based publisher of architecture and design books—sprang from a 2017 exhibit at the Architectural League of New York that featured nearly 300 of Herrin-Ferri’s photos of notable buildings, taken in some three dozen neighborhoods. As the publisher states on its website, while All the Queens Houses is mainly a photography book celebrating a broad range of housing styles, “it is also a not-so-subtle endorsement of a multicultural community that mixes global building traditions into the American vernacular, and by so doing breathes new life into its architecture and surrounding urban context.”
