In this volume published by the History Press, Fox (writing under her maiden name) explores the causes and aftermath of the Colonial-era conflicts known as the Yankee-Pennamite Wars. They unfolded in Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley beginning in the 1760s—when Connecticut Yankees began to settle there, clashing with both the existing Pennsylvanian residents and the native Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). Fox’s book covers the seminal events of that era, including the abduction of a Pennsylvania official who was held hostage for nineteen days; while some of his kidnappers were prosecuted, others fled to New York’s Finger Lakes region. Among the Wyoming Valley settler families that Fox follows is her own—a branch that includes her Cornellian grandfather, Irving Vann Earle 1905.
