Event Details

One of the great foundations of Central Park is its depth and variety of trees. Join Dendro Lab NYC founder, Carey Russell on Saturday, October 24th for one or both of two fascinating walks through the park to learn about different species – not only how to identify them, but also their local history in the park and their interrelationships with the surrounding ecosystem. Even if you know nothing about trees, maybe especially if you know nothing about trees, Carey’s walks will inform and delight you. You’ll never look at a park or forest the same way again.

Carey is providing two different walks within the park with a lunch break in between sessions for anyone who wants to continue the conversation about trees. The program is the same for Saturday and Sunday. The cost of each session is $25 and will take place rain or shine. You can sign up for one or both. Please note – each walk is limited to 17 registrants.

It’s a wonderful way to learn more about Central Park flora from an extremely personable and renowned dendrologist.  Hope you can join us.

Session 2: The Conifers (2:00pm – 4:00pm)
Meet at Le Pain Quotidien at Sheep Meadow
Cost: $25.00
Limited to 17 Registrants
This event will happen rain or shine.

Conifers are a fascinating group of cone-bearing trees with secrets buried deep in geologic time. Each species comes from a distinct and much older lineage of trees than their “newcomer“ counterpart, the deciduous broadleaf trees. You may know of evergreens like pine, spruce, fir, and hemlock. Now’s the time to learn how to easily tell them apart and about their history in the park. This is one of Carey’s most popular tree walks and will give you lots to talk about at the end of the year as Christmas trees adorn New York City’s streets.

Lunch: Le Pain Quotidien by Sheep Meadow (12:30pm – 2:00pm)

If you have any questions or want to continue conversations from the tour, Carey will be available in between sessions for an informal discussion about trees. We’ll having lunch (not included in the ticket price) at Le Pain Quotidien by Sheep Meadow from 12:30pm – 2:00pm – feel free to stay on from the morning session or join before the afternoon session.
