The good Cornellians can do: Steven Stern ’07

Steven Stern '07 teaches kids how to make Cajun sausage skillet at a recent cooking class organized by Kitchen Possible, a nonprofit in Chicago.

Steven Stern '07 spends one day a week volunteering for Kitchen Possible, a Chicago-based nonprofit that aims to empower kids through cooking. Kids ages 8 to 13 gather in their local community center, where Steve and other volunteers demonstrate how to prepare that week's dish. Then, the kids break into groups and make the dish themselves.

Steve had volunteered for a similar project in Atlanta, and he was excited to join Kitchen Possible in 2023 after he read about their annual fundraiser. Dozens of local Chicago restaurants team up to support the nonprofit and their mission to empower local kids.

“It's fun to see skills and confidence grow from week to week,” Steve says. “Cooking is such a great way to learn and apply life lessons (like laying out a plan, overcoming challenges, and working together),” he adds.

Cornellians around the globe are sharing how they do good in communities big and small. Share your own story.
