The good Cornellians can do: Robin Truelove Stronk DVM ’75

Robin Truelove Stronk DVM '75

Robin Truelove Stronk DVM '75 has been helping children as a guardian ad litem for the last nine years. In her role, she advocates for abused and neglected children, working with the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) organization in New Hampshire.

"We serve as the child or children's voice in court," Robin says. She notes that her first case not only cemented her dedication to this role, but also "convinced me that I had a niche within the organization, dedicating myself to the representation of infants and non-verbal children in court."

Robin was the first to notice the child she worked with may have hearing damage, and advocated for the right tests and exams. Because of her intervention, the child underwent successful surgery and regained normal hearing.

"My guess is that my veterinary career working with non-verbal patients has made me unconsciously more aware of body language and behavioral cues," she says. "Regardless, I now specifically look for and take cases where the children are unable to speak."

Robin encourages others to try similar volunteer roles, as well. "Being there for even one child who is adrift and helping them to find a better life is the best possible payment for all the hours spent," she says.
