The good Cornellians can do: Carol Szeto ’94
In 2009, while she was working at Pfizer’s headquarters in New York City, Carol Szeto ’94 applied for the firm’s global health fellows volunteer program. She was sent to Ghana for a six-month assignment with the company’s Mobilize Against Malaria project—whose mission was to reduce child mortality from this deadly disease.
Carol explains that, at the time, malaria claimed a life roughly every five minutes in Africa. Working on the ground helping to educate residents and train community partners to recognize and treat symptoms of malaria would change the trajectory of Carol’s career.
“The six-month fellowship was life-changing,” she says.” I realized that my business skills could drive meaningful impact in the lives of vulnerable children.”
After the fellowship, Carol transitioned from the private sector to the nonprofit world, where she now serves as CEO of Save the Children Hong Kong and continues her commitment to advocate for children.
