The early days: rappelling Taughannock

Rappelling at Taughannock Falls in the early days of COE. “Setting up a 150-foot rappel above Taughannock Falls with the temperatures in the teens and the wind blowing was exhilarating and empowering. We all felt like superheroes,” Dave says.

Dave Moriah ’72 founded Cornell Outdoor Education (COE) 50 years ago, with a handful of friends whom he recruited to help teach outdoor classes. Today, “It’s no exaggeration to say Cornell’s outdoor program is the largest and best on any campus in North America,” Dave says proudly. He shared this photo of rappelling at Taughannock Falls from the early days of COE.
