Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove ’99 shares WHO guidance on Delta variant

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove spoke to hundreds of Cornellians via Zoom from her office in Geneva, Switzerland.

In this June 30 NPR interview, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove ’99, COVID-19 technical lead at the World Health Organization (WHO), says that the Delta variant is incredibly transmissible and is now present in 96 countries worldwide, and spreading.

“Vaccines are part of the solution,” Kerkhove says, adding, “It's vaccines and, not vaccines only. And so masks are part of that. It doesn't mean that masks need to be worn everywhere all the time. It's really in areas where the virus is transmitting, the Delta variant in particular, if you're in enclosed spaces, if you're with others who haven't had vaccination.”
