  1. Scan open areas and edges for birds hiding in plain sight.
  2. Eke out birds in flight by focusing your binoculars on an object, then looking beyond it for birds.
  3. Take a seat and wait for a bit for birds to come out of hiding.
  4. Starting with common birds, practice identifying birds in flight.
  5. Check eBird’s weekly bar charts to see which species are in the neighborhood.
  6. Target birds you want to spot using eBird Targets, which lists species in your area.
  7. Let Merlin's Sound ID feature listen for birds that you may not hear.
  8. Take a moment to look around you for birds every time you go out.
