Helping babies digest their mother’s milk

Baby at check up

When Bruce German, PhD ’83, a professor of food chemistry at UC Davis, discovered that 15 percent of the nutrients in breast milk are not digestible by humans, he found a way to solve the problem and help babies achieve better gut health. Evivo probiotics reintroduce the gut microbe babies need to digest their mother's milk. Most babies born in the last 100 years are missing the necessary bacterium, due to the unintended consequences of C-section delivery and antibiotic use.

Evolve BioSystems CEO Tim Brown ’84, MBA ’92 (right), and chief financial officer Sandy Argabrite, MBA ’85 are helping to scale up the company and make their product available to babies across the country and around the world.
