Five years ago, Cornell sociologist Dr. Karl Pillemer decided to undertake a major research project on family rifts and the ways people overcome them. Using in-depth interviews with family members and family therapists, as well as a national survey, he brings research to bear on questions like: How prevalent are estrangements in families? What causes rifts? Most important, Pillemer conducted the largest study ever done of individuals who successfully reconciled after years, or decades of estrangement. Using these data, he provides concrete tips and strategies for bringing about reconciliation. His presentation will feature “hot off the presses” findings from these recently-completed studies. He places the issue of family estrangement in the larger context of major changes in the American family.
