Victoria Westover
Director, UA Hanson Film Institute

The Joy of Film Programming and Production

Reflections on 30 Years

Lights. Camera. Action! It’s another exciting season of speaker luncheons with the Yale Club. This month we’re kicking things off with a cinematic flair. Vicky Westover, Director of the University of Arizona’s Hanson Film Institute, will join us for an enthralling conversation about film programming and production. Film programmers have the extremely important job of picking which films play in cinemas and in festivals all around the world. Westover will tell us all about this important but often overlooked role in cinema, describing what skills an effective programmer needs, big changes in the field, cultural programming, the importance of public screenings in the digital age, and how audiences play key roles in the process. She also develops and coordinates films, which gives her direct insight and experience in the creation side of the business.

With over 30 years in the field, Westover’s talk will draw upon a wealth of personal experience, providing an insider view of film history and showcasing some of her own personal projects—many of which are recognized internationally. Vicky has directed numerous repertory seasons of cinema, international film festivals, competitions, and special programs with noted filmmakers. She has also produced several short and feature length independent films. She is the founder and co-director of Tucson Cine Mexico, the first and longest running film festival in the United States to showcase contemporary Mexican cinema. As Director of the UA’s Hanson Film Institute, Westover oversees the production and support of educational film programs, film events, and creative projects, with a special focus on Mexican and Native American filmmaking.

Get out the popcorn for this special kick-off luncheon marking the start of another great year for the Yale Club!
