The presentation will include an overview of current cancer research and associated community engagement activities at Cornell University.
The Research
Dr. Weiss will talk about on-going research in his laboratory aimed at understanding how cells protect the integrity of their DNA genome, the instruction manual for cell function, and also how cancer cells rewire their metabolism to fuel aggressive growth. Additional exciting cancer research from other Cornell labs in areas such as nanotechnology and animal models will also be presented.
Engaged Students
Dr. Weiss will also discuss the Cornell Cancer Partnership, a community engagement program that connects Cornell trainees with cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers in the Ithaca area through the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes (CRCFL), a local cancer support organization. Through this program, Cornell students gain an appreciation for how cancer is much more than molecules and cells, with psychological, economical and many other impacts. The students also become comfortable engaging with community members and adept at presenting research topics to lay audiences, key skills for academic scientists.
An Educated Community
Meanwhile, community members learn about cutting edge cancer research and gain the opportunity to shape the next generation of cancer scientists and other professionals. The Cornell Cancer Partnership has been recognized with a Cornell University Town-Gown award and has attracted national attention as a new paradigm for holistic training of basic cancer scientists.
