We love to give 1865 Society members a special morsel around Valentine’s Day, and this year is going to be gouda!
We’ve made a list of some grate cheesy movies with Cornell connections that are sure to melt your heart like a warm brie.
You might stilton be able to catch this one in movie theaters. Directed by Will Gluck ’93 (Friends with Benefits, Easy A), this romcom features the trope of “Let’s pretend we’re a couple.” Try this film with a classic Big Red Cheddar, made on campus and aged for six months at the Cornell Dairy.
Rating: 🧀🧀 2 Big Red Cheddars
This romcom brie-gins with Patrick Dempsey (Tom) and Michelle Monaghan (Hannah) meeting while students at Cornell in 1998. (Unfortunately, no sign of the Clocktower pumpkin!) Pair this one with a slice of stinky blue cheese, first commercially manufactured in the U.S. by Felix Frederiksen, Class of 1914.
Rating: 🧀 1 Big Red Cheddar
It’s hard to get cheddar than this classic musical of star-crossed lovers, originally penned by playwright Arthur Laurents ’37. You can marathon both Manhattan-set movie adaptations while snacking on Murray’s Stockinghall, a cheese developed in partnership between Cornell and the famous NYC cheesemonger.
Rating: 🧀🧀🧀 3 Big Red Cheddars
No whey—this 2023 romcom has a Hotelie main character! (Keep an eye out for a Cornell sweatshirt.) A little sweet, a little nutty, pair this with a Monterey Jack, popularized by David Jacks, whose daughter, Janet Jacks, went to Cornell and married Allan Balch, Class of 1889. The pair funded the construction of Balch Hall.
Rating: 🧀🧀2 Big Red Cheddars
Nobody puts Baby(bel) in a corner! Another Cornell classic, the annoying character Neil is mentioned as a Hotel School student. But don’t let that stop you from having the time of your life grooving along with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Watch this film while munching on squeaky cheese curds from the Cornell Dairy Co-op.
