The good Cornellians can do: Stephanie Mitchell ’78, JD ’80
"I find that all my volunteering gives me far more than I give to it," says Stephanie Mitchell '78, JD '80.
After a recent move to the Northern Isles in Scotland, Stephanie says volunteering has helped her get to know her new home and make connections.
From the St Magnus International Festival of arts and music, to the Orkney International Science Festival, Stephanie's volunteerism through the years reflects her varied interests. She's enjoyed meeting visitors from many countries, she says, and has "had the chance to use several languages and see people's faces light up in wonder every week," while volunteering at the art gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
She has also shared her home with a Ukrainian university student and his mother as part of the "Homes for Ukraine" initiative, and says they "remain dear friends, like a second family, to this day."
Stephanie shares that volunteering has helped her come out of her shell.
"It gives me great satisfaction when I can help others, and helps worthwhile events take place. It is also a great way to keep on learning—so, in many ways, very much like being at Cornell, 50 years on."
