Event Details

Join us for a spectacular, birding experience as we get up close with our majestic national symbol, the Bald Eagle. We are excited to be working with one of the top birding experts in the world, Peter Burke, the founder of Rocky Mountain Birding and this program is part of our new “Nature Calls” series.

WHEN: Saturday, February 22 (11am – 1pm and 1:30pm – 3:30pm)

WHERE: Beautiful Barr Lake State Park // Brighton, Colorado
(*A Colorado State Park Pass is needed for entrance. Day passes can also be purchased on site for $10/car)

WHAT: A sensorial experience that brings visitors in contact with Bald Eagles in their natural habitat using professional grade optics (binoculars will be provided and we will have access to a scope as well). We will see Bald Eagles, take photos using a scope and have an interactive workshop on this fascinating creature (Did you know the female Eagles are significantly larger than male Eagles?) This program will also feature other magical winter birds and the chance to learn about their lives, hunting strategies, plumage details and conservation status.

WHY: To gain exposure to the rich natural habitats of our amazing Mountain State to pick up a new hobby. Birding is cool, helps us find focus and calm and develops greater appreciation for the natural world.

TICKETS: $30** (includes binocular rentals and a world-class guide)

MORE: Our national symbol was in danger of disappearing in the mid-20th century, but today Bald Eagles are recovering, even thriving! Bald Eagles gather in large groups in winter, usually near open water where
food is plentiful. This spectacle is a great opportunity to study these apex predators. Once we’ve had the chance to view and discuss the Eagles, we can go for a walk around the reservoir to see what other birds and wildlife are around.

** A portion of proceeds from this event will go toward our continued enhancement of Cornell Club of Colorado programming and to ensure future events remain accessible to the diverse, vibrant, and curious 4,000+ Cornellians living in Colorado and that we can offer even more free and low-cost programming. As always, please feel free to reach out to Club President, Gary Schueller (schuellergp@gmail.com / 914.907.2169) or Club Vice President, Katherine Olaksen (kdo27@cornell.edu) with recommendations for programs, feedback, or to get more involved.
