The ever-popular Annual Cornell-Penn Thanksgiving Luncheon is returning once again in November! Irrespective of which football team wins the November 9 game at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, come hear a fascinating talk by Cornell Professor Juan P. Hinestroza, Ph.D., the Rebecca Q. Morgan ’60 Professor of Fiber Science & Apparel Design. Professor Hinestroza will speak to the topic “Can Nanotechnology be Fashionable?” He will explore with us the intersection of science and design by merging 200 years of innovation history.

The common thread of Professor Hinestroza’s scientific journey is made of cotton:  a natural fiber, made from cellulose, nature’s most abundant polymer, and a material that has been used in close proximity to our bodies for over 6,000 years. His lab has created cotton fabrics that are chemically permselective, electrically conductive, capable of changing colors, capable of sensing biomarkers from sweat, and of serving as substrates for other functionalities. These discoveries not only have generated numerous publications, patents and start-up companies, but also have allowed us to use fashion and design as a vehicle to better communicate science to youth, and to generate awareness of our research work in the general public and the media.
