Wristband uses echos, AI to track hand positions for VR and more

The main pointsScientists developed a wristband wearable that uses sound waves to detect hand movement. With EchoWrist, people could use one-handed gestures to play virtual reality games, control slides, or even use a smartphone to read a recipe in real-time as they cook. The device uses two tiny speakers to bounce inaudible sound off the hand and any hand-held objects. 

Why it’s important: The new device is smaller and consumes less energy than previous models, and could even be used on an off-the-shelf smartwatch.
