The Power of Place:
Shaping our Campus to Inspire and Enable Every Person, Every Study

University Architect, Margaret McFadden Carney, B.Arch ’80, will provide an update on various transformative projects currently in design or under construction on the Ithaca campus, sharing her thoughts about the cultural and technological changes that are influencing the design of new kinds of space. Margaret will provide insights into how design decision-making is done with a focus on people: enabling the work of students, faculty and staff, creating a strong sense of community and belonging, and maintaining a balance between forward-looking design and preservation of our iconic and architecturally eclectic campus.

Margaret McFadden Carney FAIA
Margaret M. Carney, B.Arch ’80, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, returned to Cornell in 2018 as University Architect to lead the planning and design of the university’s built environment.
Prior to joining Cornell in this role, Margaret served a total of 14 years as Associate VP, University Architect and Planner for Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, followed by Temple University in Philadelphia, and then The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She was the first University Architect and Planner for all three universities, where she led the development and implementation of transformational campus master plans. On those three campuses she established the organization and processes of the Office of the University Architect and led the planning and design of significant academic, research, residential, and athletic facilities and landscape environments. Earlier in her career, Margaret worked in various architecture firms including Walter Gropius’s firm, The Architects Collaborative, SOM in Chicago, Sasaki, and Ben Thompson Associates in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Throughout her career she has taught as an adjunct professor of Architecture and Urban Design at Kent State University, The Boston Architectural Center, and Temple University. Her work and teaching, especially over the last 25 years, has focused on urban campuses and their impact on American cities.
