 Ticket for Devil’s Slide Hike

Don’t miss the opportunity to hike the Devil’s Slide Trail with Cornell alumni and friends. You’ll be treated to incredible views of ocean and surf – and might even spot a Gray Whale heading north with its calves.

Join Cornell University alumni and friends for an exhilarating hike of the Devil’s Slide Coastal Trail.

Devil’s Slide has an infamous history. The 1.5 mile stretch was originally part of the Pacific Coast Highway. Unfortunately this segment of the highway had a notorious bad foundation for a road – which happened to edge along a narrow shelf above the ocean, with steep cliffs ascending and descending on both sides. During winter months landslides were common. Accidents regularly sent cars and trucks tumbling down the cliff. After years of debate, a bypass tunnel was built through Montara Mountain, and Devil’s Slide, the roadway, was closed to vehicles.

In 2013 – this stretch of road was reopened as a hiking trail with stunning cliff views of the rugged pacific ocean. If we’re lucky, we may get glimpses of whales or seals – especially during January as Gray Whales migrate north to Alaska.

Date: Saturday, February 25th, 2017 at 1:00PM. Please arrive 10 minutes early.

Location: Meet at *Southern* Devil’s Slide trail parking lot right before the entrance to the Tom Lantos Bypass Tunnels on Route 1 (https://goo.gl/JpS5mo). The trailhead is adjacent to the parking lot (5981 California Coastal Trail, Pacifica, CA 94044).

Trail Length: Approximately 3 miles total – for the out and back hiking trail.

Post Hike Meal: We will announce the restaurant location (in nearby Half Moon Bay) via email the night before the hike.

Special Notes: Wear RED so we can easily keep the group together. Make sure you dress in layers, since even on nice days it can get windy, and sometimes the fog can come in surprisingly quickly.

Cost: $2 members
