Cornell Cares day is a worldwide student-alumni service event that connects Cornellians, past and present, to serve their local community through direct, hands-on service projects as they swap stories and network.

On Saturday, January 7, 2017, the Cornell Club of Western Washington is privileged to contribute to this worldwide effort through volunteering at Northwest Harvest’s warehouse in Kent, Washington. We are requesting sixty people from our membership and their families to volunteer to work one shift from 9 – 11 AM that day as we show our school and community spirit – and demonstrate once again that Cornellians care.

CCWW is assembling a group of sixty (60) volunteers to work at Northwest Harvest’s Kent warehouse on Saturday, January 7th, 2017, for the 9 – 11 AM shift.

For questions about this event, please contact Steve Harris at skh27@cornell.edu.

Volunteering at Northwest Harvest

Northwest Harvest could not do its work without the participation of many energetic volunteers. In fiscal year 2011, they have donated more than 88,000 hours of time and helped distribute 26 million pounds of food to 325 independent food banks and hot meal programs statewide.

Volunteers must wear closed-toe, flat shoes – no sandals, flip flops or high heels – and no jewelry, especially earrings, nose rings, tongue rings, etc. for safety reasons. Tennis shoes are fine. Please wear comfortable, casual clothing and dress in layers. The warehouse building can be warm or chilly. Lockers are provided for volunteers’ convenience; however, there may not be enough locks available on any particular shift to accommodate each volunteer. In addition to safety considerations, please leave jewelry at home as they can be lost rather quickly in the warehouse environment.

Note: children under the age of nine may not volunteer.

It is important that volunteers arrive ten minutes prior to their scheduled shift. A complete orientation, including safety training, will begin promptly at the beginning of the shift.

The safety and wholesomeness of the food being handled is always of primary concern. If you sign up and then are sick on the day of the event, please stay home and try to let us know that you are unable to attend.
