Join Cornell University Northeast Corridor Alumni Affairs and The Cornell Club – New York for a special cultural experience! Romeo and Juliet is one of the most popular theatrical works of all time, and is performed in various mediums around the world. This winter, The Metropolitan Opera presents Charles Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette”. Gounod’s lush Shakespeare adaptation, directed by Bartlett Sher, has already won acclaim for its vivid 18th-century milieu and stunning costumes. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the sumptuous score.

Our event includes a pre-performance brunch and discussion on how Shakespeare’s works have been adapted and what goes into producing an opera with Bruce Levitt, Professor of Performing and Media Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences. Then, enjoy the opera itself at the Met!

About Bruce Levitt: Bruce Levitt has been a Professor in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Dance at Cornell University since l986. He served as Chair of the Department from l986 to l995 during which time he oversaw the final phases of construction of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts and, together with the faculty and staff, restructured the academic and productions programs of the department. At Cornell, Levitt has collaborated in community-based projects with the Lehman Alternative Community School, John O’Neal, Roadside Theatre, Urban Bush Women, Michael Keck, and members of the American Festival coalition. He co-teaches a course in community engagement with Scott Peters, Co-Director of Imagining America and faculty member in Development Sociology and Shorna Allred, faculty member in Natural Resources.
