Experience a Year in Paris and a Romp Across America with two Cornell Authors
Join us as we explore a pair of fascinating books that provide a window into two very different life experiences and cultures. Meet the Cornell authors behind these exciting new books and learn about their creative processes and how they navigated the publishing world.
Paris Nights: My Year at the Moulin Rouge, a memoir written by actor Cliff Simon with alumna Loren Stephens. At age twenty-seven Simon travels from his native South Africa to audition for the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris. His journey takes him from “Can Can school” to principal actor/dancer while off stage he gets into fights with street thugs and hangs out with diamond smugglers.
A documentary filmmaker, Stephens is president of Write Wisdom and Provenance Press. She has been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and her historical novel, All Sorrows Can Be Borne, will be published in 2017. Simon has guest-starred in numerous episodic TV shows including The Americans, Castle, 24, CSI and Stargate SG-1.
The Wangs vs. the World, a debut novel by alumna Jade Chang, is a hilarious account of a wealthy but fractured Chinese immigrant family that had it all, only to lose every last cent—and about the road trip they take across America that binds them back together
Chang has covered arts and culture as a journalist and editor. She is the recipient of a Sundance Fellowship for Arts Journalism, the AIGA/Winterhouse Award for Design Criticism, and the James D. Houston Memorial scholarship from the Squaw Valley Community of Writers.
