From High Above Cayuga’s Waters to Knee Deep in the Mississippi Mud: The Role Cornell Students Played in Advancing the Recovery Efforts of the Lower 9th Ward

This event has been cancelled.

John Forester and Ken Reardon PhD ’90 will discuss how Cornell’s Department of City and Regional Planning mobilized planning students and faculty from Cornell, Columbia and Illinois to assist residents of New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward in devising and implementing a post-disaster recovery plan for this historic African American community. John and Ken will discuss the experience of working with more than 90 planning and design students to prepare a comprehensive revitalization plan for the Lower 9th Ward which, along with skillful organizing by local ACORN members, is credited with attracting more than $147 million in recovery funds for this frequently overlooked and often maligned minority community. This event is being co-promoted by the Cornell Public Service Center as part of its “Network for Change” series of alumni events.

This lecture is being scheduled on the occasion of Temple University Press’s publication of Rebuilding Community after Katrina: Transformative Education in the New Orleans Planning Initiative, co-edited by Ken Reardon and John Forester.
