SPEAKER LUNCHEON

MAJOR GENERAL DONALD SHEPPERD

Retired Pentagon Official, Combat Veteran, CNN Military Analyst, and Author

Double, Double, Toil and Trouble: Understanding the ‘Modern’ Middle East

With SPECIAL GUESTS from the FRIDAY PILOTS GROUP

Don Shepard has earned a reputation as a balanced, insightful analyst of complex, murky situations. He has taken one of the most difficult in today’s talk.

We have expended billions of dollars and several thousand U.S. lives in the Middle East in almost 30 years of war.  Is the area a QUAGMIRE that we should leave, or is it of VITAL U.S. STRATEGIC INTEREST and we must stay?

Major General Don Shepperd promises us a whirlwind tour of this poorly-understood region, from antiquity to ISIS, in a short but revealing power-point talk. He pledges that we will leave the talk understanding everything we need to know about the history, geography, religion, archaeology, and politics of the region, speaking fluent Arabic, Farsi, and Dari with a touch of Pashto for flavor! (Did we mention that our speaker possesses a wonderful sense of humor along with his sense of history??)

Don Shepperd is a well-known speaker and author who has been in the trenches as a combat fighter pilot, head of the U.S. Air National Guard, military analyst for CNN during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and commentator for ABC radio.  His book, Bury Us Upside Down, about the experiences of a select group of pilots flying a Top Secret mission during the Vietnam War, has received wide acclaim. His latest book, The Friday Pilots, is about a group of 20 retired air force pilots living in the Tucson area who meet regularly for “lunch, laughs, and lies.”  A number of members of the group will be joining us at the December 13 luncheon, and signed copies of the book will be available for sale.

Please join us for what promises to be a most entertaining and enlightening presentation!
