The good Cornellians can do: John Grubb ’87

John and his wife Janet enjoy time with their granddaughter, Leila, in Damariscotta, Maine.

John Grubb '87 first started working at The Center, a senior center in Duxbury, Massachusetts, when they offered a property tax credit to attract new volunteers. He helped at The Center’s Mayflower Café, preparing, serving, and delivering meals to seniors. And he found that the work suited him. At the end of his first year, John was named volunteer of the year.

“I love interacting with the senior citizens who are regulars in our café,” John says, “making ala carte menu items in the café and also preparing meals that are delivered to their homes here in Duxbury, MA. I love that I get to utilize my Cornell Hotel School education and bring my professional experience to the benefit of so many here in the community.”

John worked in food service for ten years before attending Cornell. After graduation he worked with consulting firms on food service and hotel development. He also spent many years in real estate development for McDonalds, British Petroleum, and Dunkin Donuts. John says his passion for food service has never waned.

“I love the interaction with our community members,” he says, “and working alongside the great folks who volunteer and contribute to putting smiles on people’s faces."

John also works with high school seniors at Duxbury High School, where he talks with them about books and life experiences. He says he finds it “refreshing” to work with seniors at both ends of the spectrum.
