Thanks to advocates like you, we’re seeing encouraging signs in Washington.

Congress is largely rejecting the White House’s proposals for significant cuts to research programs. For example:

• The Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously passed the FY 2026 Agriculture Appropriations Bill, rejecting proposed budget cuts to research. Instead, the bill expands funding for the Agriculture Research Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture—increasing funding for some Cornell projects, such as the Grape Genomics and Hemp Germplasm Repository programs.

• The current draft of the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act maintains NSF funding near FY 2024 levels, while boosting NASA’s budget to $24.5 billion—significantly above the president’s proposal.

• The Senate Appropriations committee has proposed maintaining most NOAA funding near the FY25 level, in contrast with the White House’s proposal to remove this funding entirely.

This good news doesn’t mean our work is done. To become law, each appropriations bill still needs a full Congressional vote. For the next several weeks, the House and Senate will negotiate their respective draft bills to arrive at  single, unified versions to vote on.
