    265 Statler Hall (2nd floor)

Playful teases. Quick banter. Pranks. Funny jabs we share with friends. Ever wonder if these jokes have a moral side? David Shoemaker, Professor, Sage School of Philosophy, College of Arts & Sciences will dive into the fascinating connection between humor and morality, focusing on those funny, off-the-cuff remarks we make in our daily interactions. He’ll explore how wisecracks (sometimes they involve lying, sometimes they sting, and sometimes they play on racial or sexual stereotypes) can raise moral concerns. He’ll uncover why having a good sense of humor actually goes hand in hand with having a good sense of what's right and wrong. Plus, leave with some tips on how understanding others' feelings and stepping back to find humor in life's quirks can make us better at both laughing and being good people. This talk is based on Professor Shoemaker’s upcoming book Wisecracks: Humor and Morality in Everyday Life.

The award-winning new documentary film Move When the Spirit Says Move: The Legacy of Dorothy Foreman Cotton tells the story of Dorothy Cotton, a charismatic, courageous and consistently overlooked key player in the Civil Rights Movement -- the only woman on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's executive staff. Dorothy worked to move thousands of people from a mindset of victim to that of fully engaged citizen—empowering them not only to exercise their right to vote, but to take hold of their full range of rights and responsibilities as citizens. She served as Director of Student Activities at Cornell in the 1980's and lived the last 30 years of her life in Ithaca where she founded the Dorothy Cotton Institute in 2007.

Move When the Spirit Says Move: The Legacy of Dorothy Foreman Cotton was produced and directed by Deborah C. Hoard MPS '78 and was funded in part by a Frank H.T. Rhodes Leadership Grant from the President's Council of Cornell Women. More information and the trailer are available on the film website.

Come to this exhibit highlighting the life and career of Dr. Joyce Brothers, one of the most prolific professionals and celebrities of the last century! No matter your age, you’ve likely encountered at some point in your life, whether you watched her television shows, listened to her advice on the radio, read her columns in Good Housekeeping, or spotted her in one of her innumerable cameo and game show appearances. A Cornell alumna, Dr. Brothers was omnipresent in American media for over 50 years. A natural-born entertainer, she was first and foremost a mental health professional, often referred to as “the mother of media psychology,” who sought to do the most good for the largest number of people. The professional advice she offered to people around the country in the comfort of their own living rooms helped normalize therapy and the public discussion of mental health once deemed too private for broadcast television. Dr. Brothers graduated from Cornell University in 1947 and began donating her material to the Cornell archives in 1987. This exhibit was made possible through the generous support of the Stephen E. ’58 MBA ’59 and Evalyn Edwards ’60 Milman Exhibition Fund, with additional contributions from the Brothers family.
