SUMMARY:2026 Annual Hike – From Lyss to Lake Biel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for one of the Cornell Club of Switzerland’s favorite annual events: our traditional hike\, this year through the beautiful Seeland region of Lyss\, Aarberg\, and along the spectacular Hagneck Canal to Lake Biel. \nThis scenic walk combines nature\, history\, and great company. Starting in Lyss\, we will make our way to the charming medieval town of Aarberg\, whose picturesque old center and rich history make it one of the hidden gems of the canton of Bern. \nFrom there\, we continue along the Hagneck Canal\, an impressive engineering achievement created during the great Jura water correction project\, which redirected the River Aare into Lake Biel and transformed the surrounding landscape. What was once marshland is now one of Switzerland’s most productive vegetable-growing regions. \nToday\, the area offers a fascinating mix of cultivated land and protected natural habitats. The nearby Alte Aare\, the former riverbed\, has become a peaceful waterway known for its biodiversity. Another highlight is the remarkable fish ladder at the canal\, allowing migrating fish to navigate the waterway. \nExpect beautiful scenery and a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with fellow Cornellians while discovering a unique part of Switzerland. \nWe look forward to welcoming many alumni\, friends\, and family members for another memorable Cornell day outdoors! \nThe full details of this hike are listed here. \nPlease register by 1 September 2026 — although there is no cost\, your registration helps us plan for group size\, timing\, and logistics.\n \nDate: Sunday\, 6 September 2026\nTime: Meeting at 9:30 am\nMeeting Point Location: West exit of train station of Lyss\nRegistration Deadline: Tuesday\, 1 September 2026\nQuestions: Contact Jürg Hari at juerghari@gmail.com
