Event Details

Join other local Cornell Alumni and members of Cornell Club of Sarasota-Manatee to help improve Myakka Headwaters Preserve.

This unique property is situated at the source of the Myakka River, where seven creeks converge. The Preserve’s floodplain forests contain tupelo, pop ash, and red maple trees, supporting threatened orchids and air plants. The Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast is looking for help to plant 10,000 saplings in a former native pop ash swamp. Many trees have been lost to historic water quality and quantity problems. Replanting the forest will jump start a healing process, improving wildlife habitat and water quality in the Myakka River.

We will join other volunteers from Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Friends of Myakka River, the Florida Native Plant Society Serenoa Chapter, and the Manatee County Natural Resources Department. After our hard work we will have a picnic with provided Publix subs.

This event is open to folks of all ages!  Bring the family! Four community service hours are available for students!

It is an opportunity to be involved in something that will continue to be beneficial and a valued contribution for many years.  Trees keep growing and so will this gift of your time.

Please arrive by 8:15am so we can form a Cornell Team!
