The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/puzzles-and-games-dept\/crossword\/2022\/05\/23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">puzzle for May 23<\/a>\u2014a toughie\u2014includes clues on a dizzying variety of topics: \u201cThe Simpsons,\u201d NCAA sports, the Light Brigade, biochemistry, Greek drama, lingerie, geography, pop music, the Wild West, cocktails, the films of Cate Blanchett and Kristen Stewart, and the fashions of Swinging London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s just for starters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>34 Across: Like science fiction concerning the ethics of artificial intelligence<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>46 Down: \u201c___, \u00c9paules, Genoux, et Pieds\u201d (classic children\u2019s song, in French)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The author of this cruciverbalist\u2019s feast is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annashechtman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anna Shechtman<\/a>, a postdoctoral fellow and future faculty member on the Hill. (She\u2019ll become an assistant professor in the Department of Literatures in English in fall 2024.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A star in the crossword world, Shechtman has gained fame not only for the \u00e9lan and cleverness of her creations, but because\u2014as a woman now in her early 30s\u2014she brings a fresh voice to a field that has traditionally been dominated by older, male constructors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-style-default is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Shechtman was just 19 and an undergrad at Swarthmore when she published her <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/wordplay.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/25\/phenomenon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first puzzle in the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> in May 2010. (As the paper\u2019s \u201cWordplay\u201d column predicted, Shechtman \u201chas a bright future if she keeps up this level of creativity.\u201d) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That led to a coveted gig as the assistant to Will Shortz, the <em>Times\u2019<\/em> legendary puzzle editor. She came to Cornell in fall 2021 as a <a href=\"https:\/\/as.cornell.edu\/research\/klarman-fellowships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Klarman Fellow<\/a>\u2014part of a program in Arts &amp; Sciences that brings outstanding postdoctoral scholars to the Hill for up to three years of funded research, with no teaching obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s currently at work on two books, one of them academic: an expansion of her dissertation that explores the evolution of the concept of \u201cmedia.\u201d The other is a history of crossword puzzles, with a focus on gender issues. Titled <em>The<\/em> <em>Riddles of the Sphinx<\/em>, it\u2019s slated to be published by HarperCollins in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the first half of the 20th century, the majority of crossword constructors were women\u2014and now, it\u2019s around 20%,\u201d she notes. \u201cWhy did that happen? What does it say about \u2018women&#8217;s work\u2019\u2014and about changes in the status of crossword puzzles and how they\u2019re made?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In the first half of the 20th century, the majority of crossword constructors were women\u2014and now, it\u2019s around 20%.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As she\u2019ll describe in the book\u2014each section of which will open with a new Shechtman puzzle\u2014when crosswords debuted more than a century ago, they sparked a craze that swept the nation. And akin to future fears about the deleterious effects of movies, TV, and social media, crosswords were seen in some quarters as a societal evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople were saying not just that they were a distraction that siphons your intellectual energy, but also, in a weird way, your erotic energy,\u201d she observes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was taking away from the family unit. \u2018Wives are not tending to their husbands anymore, because they&#8217;re busy doing crossword puzzles.\u2019 There was a spate of divorces\u2014and because there was no \u2018no-fault\u2019 divorce, the \u2018fault\u2019 was crosswords.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2021\/12\/27\/escaping-into-the-crossword-puzzle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">personal essay in the <em>New Yorker<\/em><\/a> published in December 2021, Shechtman unpacked the role that crosswords played in her own youth. As she struggled with an eating disorder that ultimately led to residential treatment, constructing them\u2014starting at age 14\u2014became both an outlet and a fixation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would write them in moments of intense body dysmorphia,\u201d she recalls. \u201cMy self esteem was quite low, and they gave me a real sense of pride and accomplishment. She eventually joined most of her peers in adopting purpose-built software, which vastly speeds the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s still a lot of authorship and innovation involved,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it&#8217;s a whole different project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was among the founders of the current incarnation of the <em>New Yorker<\/em> crossword, a now-weekday feature the magazine\u2019s website launched in 2018, and she remains a regular contributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike in the <em>Times<\/em>, the <em>New Yorker<\/em> puzzles are lightly edited\u2014though heavily fact-checked\u2014so its constructors\u2019 individual voices shine through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What distinguishes a Shechtman?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery puzzle is an index of its maker\u2019s preoccupations and interests,\u201d she observes. \u201cI&#8217;ve been told that my puzzles have a lot of pop cultural references and also a lot of academic references, which is not surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Every puzzle is an index of its maker\u2019s preoccupations and interests.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Shechtman recalls that when she worked for Shortz, the two would often debate whether a clue was \u201ccrossword worthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Was it not only trivia\u2014which is, after all, intrinsic to knowledge games\u2014but downright <em>trivial<\/em>, and undeserving of inclusion in a <em>Times<\/em> puzzle? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Was it something a typical solver would know? And who was a typical solver, anyway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe got into conversations\u2014always very amicable\u2014about \u2018What is puzzle work?\u2019\u201d she says, \u201cwhich were anything but trivial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: The puzzle featured above is a .pdf file and is intended for downloading in order to print and complete by hand.
