{"id":9116,"date":"2022-06-24T08:49:16","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T12:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=9116"},"modified":"2022-09-27T11:30:43","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T15:30:43","slug":"big-red-bears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/big-red-bears\/","title":{"rendered":"Fur Above: Big Red Bears Bring Touchdown to Life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Student group is the showrunner for University\u2019s ursine mascot<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">A Florida native and self-described Disney fanatic, William Prevor \u201924 regularly visits theme parks to take photos with characters in their various costumes, documenting his conquests on two social media accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when Prevor arrived on the Hill in fall 2020, he joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigredbears.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Red Bears<\/a>\u2014the student-run organization that manages Touchdown, the University\u2019s beloved (if unofficial) mascot. As the Hotelie admits, he had a particular motive for becoming a member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to see when he was wearing all his different outfits,\u201d he says, \u201cso I could get my picture with him.\u201d But Prevor quickly became engrossed in the group that brings the furriest Cornellian to life\u2014and he\u2019s now its president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: Cornellians: Touchdown the mascot\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rhJEBOAIirY?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>About 15 members strong, the Bears support and manage Touchdown, including filling the all-important role of handler\u2014a human who escorts him at athletic events and other appearances, which numbered more than 60 during spring \u201922 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always so exciting to see how happy seeing Touchdown makes people\u2014from sneaking up on tour groups to greeting students and professors on the last day of classes,\u201d says Bears member Vikas Reddy \u201923. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI also love seeing Touchdown interact with kids. For aspiring members, joining the group\u2014a.k.a. becoming \u201cfriends with Touchdown\u201d\u2014requires an application process that, in pre-pandemic times, included an in-suit audition.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Bears treasurer Maia Marshall \u201925 remembers growing up in Syracuse and accompanying her father, Clayton Marshall \u201992, to Ithaca for hockey games and Reunion\u2014which is where, as a child, she first met Touchdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat memory has stuck with me, and I wanted to help give others a special memory from their time at Cornell,\u201d says the mechanical engineering student. \u201cHe provides a warm\u2014and huggable\u2014connection to the Hill, no matter if the event is in Lynah Rink or at Madison Square Garden. It\u2019s a way of spreading Big Red spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>He provides a warm\u2014and huggable\u2014connection to the Hill.<\/p><cite><strong>Maia Marshall \u201925<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When the pandemic necessitated a slowdown in Touchdown\u2019s appearances, the Bears took the opportunity to rethink their philosophy. Recent highlights include a Mardi Gras costume, party attire for Charter Day, pajamas that debuted at Hotel Ezra Cornell, and an Easter-themed ensemble complete with bunny ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as Prevor hints, Touchdown himself will be getting a refresh in time for fall\u2014plus his very own golf cart, so he can ride in style to more appearances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s going to take a very long bath,\u201d he says, \u201cand he\u2019s going to come back looking a little bit different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top image: Touchdown rocks Homecoming.
