a recent sampling includes a<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/06\/06\/unions-lobby-biden-for-bolder-approach-to-student-debt-relief-00037440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politico<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/06\/06\/unions-lobby-biden-for-bolder-approach-to-student-debt-relief-00037440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> piece on unions and student debt relief<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/02\/majority-of-american-workers-want-more-unionization-at-their-own-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC story on workers supporting unionization<\/a>, as well as coverage in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, <em>Washington Post<\/em>, <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a dozen undergraduate and graduate research fellows train with the Institute each year on research methods and the basics of policymaking. On the ILR faculty for four decades, the professor of labor and employment law helps tie the school\u2019s research to real-world policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood practice is based on good theory,\u201d she notes. \u201cAnd bridging the extension and resident sides of ILR has always been an important goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Bridging the extension and resident sides of ILR has always been an important goal.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Risa Lieberwitz<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A focus on those connections has informed the educations of ILR students like master\u2019s candidate Victor Yengle. Having studied economics and political science as an undergrad and worked as a community and labor rights organizer for more than seven years, he came to the Hill to research worker-led initiatives and to design remedies for human and labor rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a graduate fellowship, he has worked closely with Institute faculty and staff to organize events like the school\u2019s Labor Roundtable and annual Union Days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn class, we\u2019re learning about labor rights and labor law\u2014and we also see how they interact in the workplace through the Institute,\u201d he says. \u201cIt has helped me figure out the intersection between research and impact.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Inspired by early activism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Campos-Medina returned to her alma mater in 2015 to lead the Institute\u2019s leadership development program, assuming her current role as executive director six years later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A native of El Salvador\u2014which was riven by civil war during her childhood in the 1980s\u2014she\u2019s the daughter of political refugees who came to the U.S. as undocumented immigrants. They worked low-wage jobs and sent money home, but it took another nine years for them to win political asylum and to bring Campos-Medina, then 14, and her three brothers to the U.S. legally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The family settled in the Alexandria, VA, area\u2014home to a thriving community of immigrants from Central America, Pakistan, and Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div Cornell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campos-Medina, who had closely watched her parents\u2019 experience and hardships, aimed to study labor rights and employment law.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Her activism on the Hill began on the day she moved into North Campus, when she saw University food service staff and others handing out leaflets in a union organizing drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawn to the cause, she soon became involved with labor-rights issues on and off campus, joining such organizations as ILR\u2019s Committee on Labor Action, Cornell\u2019s Committee on U.S.\/Latin America Relations, and the University\u2019s chapter of United Students Against Sweatshops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was part of a group of student protestors\u2014including Eduardo Pe\u00f1alver \u201994, who\u2019d go on to serve as dean of the Law School from 2014\u201321\u2014who held a four-day takeover of Day Hall in 1993 that led to additional faculty hires in Latino studies and across campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Unions need to support the workers who have the courage to organize.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Patricia Campos-Medina \u201996, MPA \u201997<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese were moments where you had to choose: which side are you on?\u201d she recalls. \u201cAm I in school just for myself? As a sideline to her day job, she hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/patriciacamposmedina.com\/activista-rise-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Activista Rise Up<\/em><\/a>, a podcast devoted to social and economic justice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Cornell, Campos-Medina continues to conduct research on immigrant workers\u2019 rights, is a policy adviser to labor unions and worker justice organizations in the service and warehouse industries, and serves as a career liaison to students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have always believed,\u201d she says, \u201cthat the future of the labor movement lies in the young people who are passionate about change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Campos-Medina at the ILR School.
